Sopwith pup

In general construction and configuration the Pup was a classic of simplicity. The aircraft was built, and is operated by, The Vintage Aviator Ltd in Masterton, New Zealand. Based on the original factory drawings, this full-size Pup is a sporting single-seater aeroplane.


The Pup wears the colour scheme. Some operated with the United States Navy as well. With pleasant flying characteristics and good manoeuvrability, the aircraft proved very successful.

In the mid-thirties Richard Shuttleworth found one, with the registration G-EBKY, being flown from a field at Kempston, west of Bedfor by Geoff Chamberlain. This accurate reproduction Pup has a Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) colour scheme with ANZAC printed in bold on port and starboard sides of the fuselage.

Responsive and maneuverable, it was an excellent dogfighter, deployed by the British both on land and at sea. The kit goes together rather well. Fielded in the Pup was originally rather successful against its German opponents, and performed very well at the Battle of the Somme in October of that year. It is always best to buy printed plans because my scanner versions often have distortions that can cause parts to fit poorly.


THE MODEL A semi scale finished. The gyroscopic effects of its powerful rotary engine made it dangerous for novice pilots, and almost as many were killed in accidents as died in combat. The combat life of the Pup was short.
