The fuzhou strait culture and art centre

Fuzhou is the capital and one of the largest cities in. Located in Mawei New Town , facing the Minjiang River , the Strait Culture and Arts Centre functions as a connective device. It connects cities and communities along and over the Taiwan Strait. An finally, it connects people to culture.

The flower is manifested in the formal language and colour of the architecture takes inspiration from the petals of a jasmine blossom, the city. And , finally, it connects people to culture.


PES-Architects collaborated with Taiwanese ceramic artist, Samuel Hsuan-yu, on the interior. Five main buildings have been erected on the grounds: a concert hall for classical performances, an opera house, a theatre hall, exhibition spaces for art and a cinema. Each petal is an individual building serving a different purpose.


There’s a 700-seat multi-functional theatre, as well as a 600-seat opera house, a 000-seat concert hall, an art exhibition hall and a movie centre.

Designed by the Finnish design master Pekka Salminen, the project covers an area of about 150square meters ( the floorage of the basement is about 50square meters). Upon completion, it will become an international landmark building of Fuzhou , which is a cultural and historical city with a history of more than 2years. The Strait Culture and Arts Centre is located in Mawei New Town, facing the Minjiang River.


The large complex is divided into five smaller units which are conceived as the petals of a jasmine. The highly expressive, large scale commission is the architecture practice’s fourth completed work in China, and takes its inspiration from the Chinese jasmine blossom, the official city flower of Fuzhou. PES Architects used custom-developed ceramic tiles and louvres to create the curving lines of the Strait Culture and Art Centre in Fuzhou, China. Each petal is a separate building-a multi-function theater, 600-seat opera house, 000-seat concert hall, art exhibition hall, and movie center-all covered by massive white steel lattices and linked by a Cultural Concourse and large roof terrace.


The design of the Strait Culture and Art Center is inspired by the Jasmine, which is the “City Flower” of Fuzhou. The five functional buildings are like five petals of the jasmine flower. The facade of the buildings are clad with white terracotta panels and terracotta louvers.

Facing onto the Minjiang River, the 15000sqm site takes inspiration from a Jasmine flower, with five buildings conceived as if petals fanning out from the centre.

Aston University, Birmingham, has appointed four architecture practices to a new framework which called for a range of disciplines across five lots.


The winning design has been inspired by the petals of a jasmine blossom, which is the city flower of Fuzhou. It is manifested in both the formal language and colour of the architecture.
