Primary social group

Examples, of these would be family groups , love relationships, crisis support groups , church groups , etc. Relationships formed in primary groups are often long-lasting and goals in themselves. With these people we have direct, intimate and personal relationships that play important roles in the formation of our sense of self and identity. Primary groups are those that are close-knit.


They are typically small scale, include intimate relationships, and are usually long lasting.

The members of primary groups feel a strong personal identity with the group. The membership is limited to a small number and usually confined to defined area. Added to this, the primary groups are characterized by being more durable and stable than the secondary ones. There are two primary groups : family and friends. Examples of these would be family groups , love relationships, crisis support groups , and church groups.

So, within the concepts of social institution and social group there is a significant internal difference. While the social group , whether primary or secondary, is a collection of interacting individuals, the social institution is a system of social relationships and social norms that exist in a particular area of human activity. It is a small group in which a small number of persons come into direct contact with one another. They meet “face to face” for mutual help, companionship and discussion of common questions. They live in the presence and thought of one another.


A group of boys discussing the last watched movie is a social group because through their verbal interaction, they are influencing one another. Examples: A family living in a home, group of employees working in a same organization, group of classmates, a group of members of a meeting and so on. A great example of a primary social group would be the family.


They can all be characterized as primary groups. And group members care about you and you would care about other members of the group as well. And you have this sense of loyalty to each other. And belonging to the group is the whole value of the friendship in itself.


To have a clear understanding of primary group , it is necessary to analyze its characteristics. This intimacy of relationship based on the following characteristics. Social group is a group of two or more persons who are in state of interaction with one another”.

State of social interaction refers to reciprocal influence individuals exert on one another through inter-stimulation and response. The three types of social groups are primary , secondary and reference groups. A social group is defined as a collection of individuals who interact and share a sense of unity among each other.


A primary group is a small social group that contains personal and long-lasting relationships. Family is the most common primary group , but marriage or any relationship that is long-lasting is a primary group as well. It is a group of individuals who interact with each other and share similar interests.


Interacting with gangs is a normal part of social development, regardless of gender, ethnic group or popularity. Although they occur during the development of adolescence and childhoo they exist in all age groups. Within social groups people meet and interact regularly and have a sense of identity or belonging to the group. They have norms and beliefs and therefore cannot act or behave in an way that is not mindful or considerate of other members of the group. Teaches the members to work in the society according to their rules.


A second type of social group is a secondary group. They also tend to be more short-term. Secondary groups are larger, more anonymous, and impersonal compared to primary groups. Such groups are often based on shared interests, hobbies, or activities.


It is the process whereby individuals learn to be effective members of a given group. It is through socialization that individuals learn how to walk, talk and feed. The family is the first point of an individual’s interaction.
